Math
  • December Number Corner will focus on classifying quadrilaterals, data collection and creating line and scatter plots.  The games we will learn will strengthen our skills of making equivalent decimals and fractions and division of whole numbers resulting in fractional answers. Finally, we will revisit our friend, the ratio table, to help us with multiplication and division of whole numbers and recognizing their relationships.
  • Last week, we looked for decimal equivalents for common fractions. We also learned a new game to help us practice our understanding of using adding and subtracting decimals to get to a whole.
  • This week, continued with finding fraction and decimal equivalents, as well as placing decimals on a number line. We also started looking at metric conversions.....why is this always harder than you might think it will be????
  • Next week, will finish up the first three modules, then review for the beginning of the Unit 3 assessment, which we will take on December 6th.
  • The week of December 11-15 we will finish Unit 3 with work on division using base ten, then take the rest of the assessment. We then will take the Bridges Interim Assessment #1and our winter AMath ....whew!
Literacy this week
  • Our first EL Module is about Human Rights and we are using the book Esperanza Rising as a mentor text.
  • Last week we finished up our final edits for our monologue.
  • This week we worked with groups to create a writing plan for a director's note for our presentation program.  Then we took the end of Unit 3 assessment which included some work with perfect verb tense, reading fluency, providing a verbal summary and an independent writing of the director's note based on their group's plan.  (Wow!  It was a lot!!)
  • End of this week practiced and presented our monologues!!  We have finally closed out our time with Esperanza Rising.
  • Next week we will introduce our second EL Module which is about rainforest canopies.  We will be using the narrative nonfiction text The Most Beautiful Roof in the World

Science
  • This week continued our second science unit of the year: Ecosystems Restoration
  •  The question we will be answering is:
How do organisms in an ecosystem get the matter and energy they need to grow and thrive?
  • Our first chapter's guiding question is:  Why aren't the jaguars and sloths growing and thriving?
  • Our second chapter's guiding question is: Why aren't cecropia trees growing and thriving?
SELS/Health lessons
  • Cyberbullying/Bullying
  • Setting personal goals
  • Food groups around the world
  • Watch the Randall Way video for November via your child's Google Classroom.
