New News
  • Reminder:  No school on Friday, January 26th for grade reporting.

Oldie, but Goodies

Math
  • January Number Corner involves revisiting some volume work.  Daily, we are given a "building" to observe, describe and look for patterns as it continues to grow.  When a building is complete, we use our observations to create a formula/algebraic expression that would work if the building continued to grow.  In addition, we are able to see how we can find the volume of a composite figure by looking at the rectangular prisms that work together to create the whole. In addition, we are doing some problem solving with adding fractions of money and time.
  • This week we moved to the array strategy as we prepare to move into the algorithm for multiplication. We will continue with this for next week as well.  Practice, practice, practice :)
Literacy this week
  • Our second EL Module which is about rainforest canopies.  We will be using the narrative nonfiction text The Most Beautiful Roof in the World as well as a variety of other articles and text support our reading and writing.
  • This week we began Unit 2 in Module 2.  We read some new texts and find the "gist" of their meaning.  We also looked at figurative language and author's point of view.
  • Next week we will finish a "mid-unit assessment" comparing texts and doing some close reading with our texts.  In addition, we will discuss point of view and how that can influence a text. We will actually do this assessment together as a class so that students have a solid model of what we are looking for moving forward.

Science
  • This week ended our Science Unit.
  • Next week e will begin the third unit of the year: Modeling Matter
    •  The question we will be investigating and answering is:
What happens when two substances are mixed together?
    • Our first chapter's guiding question will be:  Why did the food coloring separate into different dyes?

SELS/Health lessons
  • Martin Luther King, Jr. Day
  • Looking at healthy routines
  • Watch the Randall Way video for January via your child's Google Classroom.
  •  Our focus this month are kind behaviors on the bus and playground and we are working towards a goal of  1500 Raccoon Paws to earn a  February Stuffy and Read-In day!! The video can be found in your child's Google Classroom.
