New News
  • My name is Carly Johnson, and I work in marketing for the Wisconsin Men’s & Women’s Tennis Teams. On Friday, March 8th, the Men’s Tennis Team will be holding a one-hour youth clinic for both boys and girls age 12 and under at the Nielsen Tennis Stadium here on the UW-Madison Campus. I was reaching out to see if you have any kids interested! The clinic is free for those who register. The event will be held from 5:00 PM to 6:00 PM, with check-in beginning at 4:30 PM. The clinic includes the development of tennis skills with the help of Wisconsin Varsity Tennis players and coaches, followed by a pizza party with the team! Participants should wear comfortable athletic clothing, athletic shoes and bring their own racket. Below is a link to register, and once the kids are registered, I will directly send a confirmation email to the parent about the day of the event!

Oldie, but Goodies
  • Forward Exams are coming!!  Right now we are scheduling the Literacy Assessments the first week after Spring Break in the afternoon.  Math Assessments will be the following week.        (See Calendar) If you can avoid being gone/scheduling appointments on these testing days, we would appreciate it!! Please make sure your child has headphones at school for testing days.  Thank you!

  • 5th grade will have 3 field trips this Spring.  The first one is a film festival.  There is no cost, but we can't take any chaperones.  For the last two, we would love to have as many chaperones as we can!  However, you do need to be Level 2 certified/approved to join us.  It is a long process to be approved.  If you think you might want to join us, please look at information on this process:  start the process by visiting the Volunteering page at MMSD’s website.
Math
  • March Number Corner will focus on estimation and multiplication of decimal numbers through the skill of finding area.  We will also be collecting and analyzing data based on the lengths of our math pencils during the month of March.  (You would be amazed at how few pencils make it to the end of the month....) Not only will we discuss the data, but we will also be compiling it into a line plot and making conclusive statements based on what we found. Finally, we will continue to practice and strengthen our division skills along with revisiting adding and subtracting fractions.
  • This week we switched gears to dividing with fractions and modeling what this looks like.
  • Next week we will review and take the Unit 5 Assessment.
  • After the Unit 5 Assessment students will take the Bridges Assessment #2 by the end of the week.
  • We will begin Unit 6 the week of March 11.  For this unit, we will be learning more about graphing, geometry and volume (again).
Literacy this week
  • We are in Module 3-Athlete Leaders of Social Change.
  • The text is Promises to Keep-How Jackie Robinson Changed America by Sharon Robinson.
  • This week we continued to work on summarizing.  In addition, students had discussions to help understand and determine their opinion on how and which factors led to Jackie Robinson's success.
  • Next week, we will continue or work with finding evidence to support factors that helped lead to Jackie Robinson's success and look at a timeline to help us understand the progression of change.
Science
  • This week we worked on our third science unit of the year: Modeling Matter
  • Next week we will complete this unit!!
  •  The question we will be investigating and answering is:
What happens when two substances are mixed together?
  • Our first chapter's guiding question is:  Why did the food coloring separate into different dyes?
  • Our second chapter's guiding question is:  Why do some salad dressings                                               have sediments, and others do not?
  • Our third chapter's guiding question is:   Why can salad dressings                                                          ingredients separate again after being                                        mixed?

Social Studies
After we finish our Modeling Matter unit, we will do another mini-unit on Native American history.  We will be using the text The Mishomis Book--The Voice of the Ojibway by Edward Benton-Banal to guide our learning for the next few weeks.

SELS/Health lessons
  • Online safety
  • Learning About Ability
  • Watch the Randall Way video for February via your child's Google Classroom.
  • Our focus this month will be on handling bullying behavior and our goal is 1,100 paws to earn a game day in March.
